Main Story
The party starts in the picturesque town of Meadowville, known for its colorful houses and friendly animal residents.
Farmer Brown, a stout, elderly rabbit, rushes to the party in distress. He shares his worries about the raccoon gang stealing his prized vegetables and cheese, which he needs for the upcoming Harvest Festival.
Gathering Clues at the Market
The party can start by talking to vendors and locals at the market. Mini-challenges here include persuading wary animals to talk or trading items for information.
If convinced, Granny Hedgehog mentions seeing raccoons near the riverbank that leads to the forest, while Mayor Paws suggests investigating the farm.
Investigating the Farm
At the farm, players search for physical clues (footprints, fur, etc.). Lily’s scouting and Oliver’s knowledge are particularly useful.
Journey to the Shady Forest
The path to the forest is filled with obstacles. Bella’s agility helps the party navigate, while Max’s strategic thinking aids in avoiding natural hazards.
Puzzle 1: Colorful Stones
The adventurers come across a magical gate in the Shady Forest, guarded by a wise old turtle. The gate is locked, and the only way to open it is by correctly arranging a set of colorful stones in a specific order.
Puzzle Setup
Stones: Present a series of stones (or tokens) in primary colors: red, blue, and yellow.
Clue: The wise turtle gives a simple rhyme as a clue: "Red as the apple, blue as the sky, yellow as the sun; place them in order, and the gate will open wide."
Solution
The players must arrange the stones in the order mentioned in the rhyme: red (apple), blue (sky), yellow (sun).
Reward
Upon solving the puzzle, the magical gate opens, allowing the adventurers to continue their quest. They also receive a small token from the wise turtle, a shiny pebble that they will probably be able to trade at the market.
Raccoon Encounter in the forest
As the adventurers continue their quest to track down Rascal the Raccoon and his gang, they find themselves deep within the Shady Forest, following elusive tracks and whispers of the raccoons' whereabouts. The group's determination is unwavering, but the raccoons are cunning and always seem to be one step ahead.
The Chase
While navigating through the dense foliage of the forest, the party spots a member of the raccoon gang, easily identified by a distinctive bandana. Seizing the opportunity, they decide to stealthily follow the raccoon, hoping it will lead them closer to the hideout.
As the chase unfolds, the raccoon, agile and quick, darts through the underbrush and leaps over fallen logs. Lily's swift legs, Max's strategic thinking, Oliver's keen eyesight, and Bella's agility come into play as they navigate the tricky terrain.
The Discovery
In the midst of the pursuit, the raccoon, in its haste to escape, scampers up a tree and across a narrow branch. In its panic, it drops something from its pouch - a piece of old parchment paper flutters down, landing softly on a bed of leaves below.
After ensuring the raccoon is out of sight and no longer a threat, the group should gather around the parchment. When looking at it, they discover it's not just any paper, but a clue that could be vital to their quest - a simple drawing depicting the order of forest objects.
The Realization
The adventurers might deduce that this clue must be related to the raccoons' activities or perhaps a puzzle protecting their lair. Solving this puzzle might be the key to uncovering the raccoon hideout and retrieving the stolen goods.
The accidental discovery of the clue paper, a result of the raccoon's careless escape, becomes a fortunate turn in their adventure, bringing them one step closer to solving the mystery of the Great Raccoon Heist.
Finding the Raccoon Lair
The entrance is well-hidden, it takes the party a while to find it but they eventually do it.
Puzzle 2: Forest Object Order
After finally finding the entrance of the Lair, the characters realize that the entrance is locked. On the side of the entrance is a stone containing 3 small holes.
Puzzle Setup
Objects: Present three simple forest objects - a pinecone, a leaf, and a twig.
Clue: The old parchment paper that the characters retrieved during the chase should help them solve the puzzle.
Solution
The correct order based on the clue is:
- Leaf (falls from the tree)
- Twig (rests upon the ground)
- Pinecone (comes from branches high)
Reward
Upon arranging the objects correctly, a small compartment in the stone opens, revealing a key.
Navigating the Lair
Encounter: A Game of Chance with Rascal the Raccoon
Objective: The party must negotiate with Rascal the Ringtail to convince him to return the stolen goods. The negotiation will take the form of a dice game where the party and Rascal each roll d6 dice, and the highest total wins. The party can use their character's abilities to gain advantages in the game.
Game Setup
Each party member and Rascal rolls a d6 die. This initial roll determines their base score. Rascal, being the raccoon leader, starts with a bonus of +2.
Character Abilities
Each character can choose to use their unique abilities to gain an advantage in the game. Here's how each character's ability can be utilized:
- Lily the Rabbit's "Swift Scout" talent allows her to roll the dice with a +1 bonus to her roll.
- Oliver the Owl's "Wisdom of the Ages" talent allows the party to re-roll their d6 die once and choose the higher result.
- Max the Fox's "Master of Strategy" talent allows him to come up with a clever plan once during the game. This plan can grant the group a +1 bonus to one character's roll.
- Bella the Squirrel's "Acrobatic Prowess" talent allows her to reroll once during the game if she doesn't like her initial roll.
Rolling the Dice
- The party members and Rascal roll their d6 dice simultaneously.
- After the rolls, each character adds their score and any bonuses gained from their abilities.
Determining the Winner
- Compare the score of the party (scores plus ability bonuses) with Rascal's score.
- If two of the party member's total is higher than Rascal's, they win the game, and Rascal agrees to return the stolen goods.
- If Rascal's total is higher or equal to most of the party's total, the negotiation is not successful, and the party will need to convince him to play again. (They can trade the shiny pebble to play two extra games if they fail to convince him using a standard persuasion roll (4-6 on a d6 die)
Returning the Goods
The party returns to Farmer Brown with the goods, earning the town's gratitude and celebration.
Conclusion
The adventure concludes with the heroes being celebrated in Meadowville.
Farmer Brown, grateful for the return of his goods, throws a grand feast in their honor. The players are recognized as the brave heroes of Meadowville, and Rascal the Raccoon, having learned the error of his ways, promises to mend his mischievous ways.
The story can have alternate endings based on the choices and actions of the players, ensuring a unique experience each time it's played. For instance, if the players choose a more compassionate approach with Rascal, they might reform him, turning him into an ally in future adventures.
